From EWTN on the new Missal translation

Recently Fr. Mitch Pacwa had Colin Donovan and Helen Hull Hitchcock on his EWTN Live show talking about the new translation of the Roman Missal.  One thing that never ceases to amaze me as I continue to learn about the new translation is the number of valid reasons for some of the specific changes were made – it is never just “this is a more literal translation”, rather there are always theological implications for the changes.

This was, contrary to what some critics would like to claim, never about simply getting a more faithful translation. This is an example of legen orandi lex statuat suplecandi – the law of prayer illuminates the law of belief.

Heresies were creeping into people’s minds from unclear and simplistic prayers that were entirely too open to interpretation and, moreso, to full fledged change based on the evolution of a living language, like English.
